atol
A large permanent fish trap made of rocks in the shape of a spade on a playing card.
The two sides, or arms, called kalipapa, ‘wings’, meet and form a narrow entrance that leads into a circular area, the bonoan, where the fish are trapped. These atol fish traps are very large and can easily be seen from an airplane. There are many around Cuyo Island.
